Emotional expression belongs to natural history: inherited habits, contrasting signals, and nervous-system action connect human faces and gestures with other animals and with our past.

The central idea

Darwin made expression an evolutionary question. He combined observations of infants, animals, photographs, questionnaires, and travel reports to ask why bodies take characteristic forms in fear, rage, joy, or grief. His methods and universal claims require scrutiny, but the project changed emotion from a mark of civilized refinement into a shared biological inheritance.
